In the fast-paced world of product development, having an efficient tool to manage ideas and roadmaps is absolutely critical. Fortunately, Atlassian understood this burning need of product managers and, last month, introduced a groundbreaking new feature - Jira Product Discovery. As a Product Manager at Granularity, I had the opportunity to leverage this feature to develop the roadmap for our platform.
In this blog post, I'll share my review of Atlassin's Jira Product Discovery tool and explain how it simplifies product management.
What is Jira Product Discovery?
Let's start by understanding what Jira Product Discovery is all about. It is a dedicated tool for product teams to capture and prioritize ideas, keeping everyone aligned with custom roadmaps - all within Jira's familiar environment. With a visually intuitive interface, it fosters fruitful brainstorming sessions, involving everyone from PMs and developers to marketers and designers.

The Three Highlights that Set JPD Apart
- Streamlined Ideas-to-Action Items-to-Delivery Process
With JPD, the journey from an initial idea to actionable tasks, represented as Jira tickets, has never been smoother. One can collect all the ideas on the "All Ideas" page and follow the steps of Impact vs Effort assessment, tag customer segments, add timelines to create the Product Roadmap, and finally, monitor delivery with the help of a pre-built milestones checklist.

- Automated Feature Prioritization for TRUE Agile Development
Agile development relies on prioritizing features based on their impact and effort. Jira Product Discovery provides a powerful scatter plot that helps visualize the relationship between the impact of a feature and the effort required to implement it. This visual representation can prove to be pivotal in roadmap planning, ensuring that valuable ideas with manageable effort are prioritized for development.

- Enhanced Collaboration & Alignment
At its core, JPD helps transform product management into a team sport. Since Product Managers often work with cross-functional teams, effective collaboration and communication are key to success. This new feature enables Product Managers to clearly communicate and collaborate across teams with custom roadmaps and views, ensuring stakeholders are informed, engaged, and aligned throughout the product development journey.

Areas of Improvement
While Jira Product Discovery is undoubtedly a powerful tool, there are a few areas where it could be further enhanced:
- Jira Product Discovery allows many different ways to tag things, which can get really confusing. Simplifying tags might go a long way in improving user experience.
- Currently, Jira Product Discovery only connects with Atlassian Products & Solutions. However, allowing integration with apps like MS Office, Google Office, Canva, etc. would significantly enhance its versatility.
In Conclusion
Embracing Jira Product Discovery empowers Product Managers to be more effective and efficient in their roles, ultimately contributing to the success of their products and organizations. If you haven't explored this game-changing feature yet, I highly recommend giving it a try to supercharge your product development process.
Happy exploring!
